The storm kettle, manufactured by the Eydon Kettle Company, is an outdoors utility based upon a traditional water- boiling device produced by Irish crofters. A vital component of a trekkers expedition pack, the lightweight Storm Kettle could turn out to be a lifesaver in more ways than one!
How it works is simplicity itself. You simply fill the kettle with water, build and light a fire in the device base and finally place the kettle onto the base for boiling. If necessary, additional fuel (tiny twigs, grass etc) can be added through the top in order to get a moderate heat going. Due to the water surrounding the chimney it gradually heats up as the temperature of the fire chamber increases. Eventually when the water reaches boiling point, it can be carefully poured to make a much needed hot drink via lifting from the base by the handle.
The idea originated from the remote west of Ireland where water-boiling devices were fashioned by Irish crofters for itinerant workers, fishermen and tourists. They would manufacture these boilers from copper using hand tools. This design was then modified and manufactured in the 70’s by the Eydon Kettle Company. Essentially the basic design of the product remains the same so that none of the effectiveness of the Storm Kettle is lost from its traditional roots.
